Linux Laptop Experiment PT: 2

One change from my last post was the discovery of POP!_OS by system76 which at first appears to be a ubuntu skin or ui kit but in reality its got alot going for it! I will avoid going into a ton of detail in this article and will do a full review in the future but the sales pitch for laptop users is pretty solid.

  • pre-configured TLP with 3 power modes (performance, balanced, battery)
  • system wide dark theme
  • popshop app store
  • ubuntu based makes for high compaibility for apps/games

The real selling point for me was out of the box dramatically improved battery saving from the POP!_OS power modes which has pushed my razer ultra book up to 8+ hours of battery life, something that took far more effort in ubuntu or fedora setups and deep powertop/tlp fiddling.

I would say that the experiment has been a success! the only draw back over ive found so far when compared to macos is not being able to build IOS apps locally but there are ways around this via VM's which will be for sure another article. Native docker and being able to dabble in some of the newer systems like buildah and podman which will only work on native linux systems.
